How to Install MDF Shaker Wall Panelling - A Step-by-Step DIY Guide

MDF shaker wall panelling is one of the easiest ways to upgrade a room, whether you’re refreshing a hallway, bedroom or living space. With the right preparation, it’s a DIY project most people can complete over a weekend.

This guide explains how to install MDF shaker wall panelling using MDF panelling kits from The Goods Sheet.

What is MDF shaker wall panelling?

Shaker wall panelling uses flat MDF strips fixed to the wall to create clean, evenly spaced panels. It’s a timeless style that works well in both modern and traditional homes.

MDF is ideal for wall panelling because it’s smooth, stable, and easy to paint, giving a high-end finish once installed.

Tools and materials you’ll need

Tools

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Spirit level
  • Fine-tooth saw
  • Caulking gun

Materials

Step 1: Plan your layout

Decide on the height of your panelling – half wall, feature section, or full height. Measure up from the skirting board and draw a level line across the wall to mark the top of the panelling.

Always double-check your marks with a spirit level before fixing.

Step 2: Fit horizontal strips (if using)

If your design includes top or bottom rails:

  1. Measure the wall width
  2. Cut strips to length
  3. Apply grab adhesive to the back
  4. Fix in position and pin if needed

These strips frame the rest of the panelling.

Step 3: Work out spacing

To achieve even spacing:

  1. Measure the full wall width
  2. Subtract the width of one strip
  3. Divide the remaining space by the number of panels you want
  4. Subtract the strip width to find the gap size

This keeps everything centred and balanced.

Step 4: Install vertical strips

Measure between the top and bottom rails and cut vertical strips to size.

  • Fix the first and last strips at each end
  • Space remaining strips evenly
  • Check alignment as you go

Grab adhesive is usually enough, with pins used temporarily while it cures.

Step 5: Fill and paint

Once fitted:

  • Fill joints and pin holes with decorators caulk
  • Wipe excess with a damp cloth
  • Lightly sand once dry
  • Prime and paint

Painting after installation gives the best seamless finish.
