Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Standard and Moisture Resistant MDF?

Standard MDF is ideal for dry, interior projects like bedroom furniture. Moisture Resistant (MR) MDF, usually tinted green, is manufactured with a moisture-repellent resin, making it much more stable in "humid" areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or utility rooms where standard board might swell.

Why is MR MDF usually green?

The green tint is a dye added during manufacturing to help trade professionals quickly distinguish it from standard MDF. It’s important to note that the green colour doesn't provide the moisture resistance itself; that comes from the special water-repellent resins used to bond the wood fibres.

Is "Moisture Resistant" the same as "Waterproof"?

No. While MR MDF is designed to withstand high humidity and occasional splashes, it should never be submerged in water or left in standing puddles. For outdoor use or direct contact with water, you would need a different material like Marine Plywood.

Can I use MR MDF for bathroom vanities or kitchen units?

Yes, this is exactly what it's built for. It is the preferred material for bespoke bathroom cabinets, kitchen carcasses, and window sills, as it won't swell or "fluff up" like standard MDF when exposed to the damp air common in those rooms.

Does the moisture resistance affect how I paint it?

Actually, it makes painting easier! Because MR MDF is denser and less porous than standard board, it doesn't "suck up" as much primer, especially on the edges. You still need an MDF primer, but you'll often find you get a smoother finish with fewer coats.

Is it safe to cut and sand MR MDF at home?

Yes, but like all engineered wood products, it contains resins. You should always wear a dust mask (P2 or P3 grade) and work in a well-ventilated area or use a vacuum extraction system to avoid inhaling the fine dust particles.
