Frequently Asked Questions

Is OSB as strong as plywood for structural work?

In many cases, yes. Modern OSB3 is manufactured to meet or exceed the structural performance of plywood in roofing and wall applications. Because it is made of compressed layers of wood strands oriented in specific directions, it is highly resistant to warping, delamination, and knots, providing a more uniform strength across the entire sheet.

What makes OSB3 different from standard OSB?

OSB3 is specifically engineered for use in humid or damp conditions. Unlike basic OSB2, which is for dry internal use, OSB3 is the industry standard for structural applications like roofing and timber-frame wall sheathing where the boards might be exposed to the elements during the construction phase.

Can I paint or finish OSB boards for a decorative look?

While OSB is primarily a structural material, its "industrial" texture is increasingly popular for interior design. It can be painted, though we recommend using a high-quality primer first, as the wood strands are thirsty. For a natural look, a clear floor varnish or wax can highlight the unique strand pattern while providing a hard-wearing surface.

What does the "3" in OSB3 actually signify?

The "3" indicates that these are structural, moisture-resistant boards. While OSB2 is only for dry, internal use, OSB3 is engineered to perform in humid conditions, making it the industry standard for house building, roofing, and wall sheathing in the UK.

Is OSB really as strong as plywood?

Yes, and in some cases, it's even more consistent. Because OSB is made of thousands of strategically layered wood strands compressed with high-performance resins, it has no internal voids or knots. This gives it exceptional load-bearing strength and "shear" resistance, which is why it’s a favourite for structural flooring and bracing.

Do I need to treat the edges if I cut OSB?

Highly recommended. While the faces of OSB3 are moisture-resistant, a fresh cut exposes the inner strands. If you're using it in a shed, roof, or humid area, you should seal the cut edges with a wood sealer or paint to prevent moisture from wicking into the board and causing it to swell.

Is OSB an environmentally friendly choice?

Very much so. OSB is made from fast-growing, small-diameter trees (like Aspen and Pine) and utilizes the "whole log," meaning there is very little waste. It is a highly sustainable alternative to plywood, which requires much larger, older trees to produce the long veneers needed for the layers.
