Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Standard and Moisture Resistant MDF?

Standard MDF is ideal for dry, interior projects like bedroom furniture. Moisture Resistant (MR) MDF, usually tinted green, is manufactured with a moisture-repellent resin, making it much more stable in "humid" areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or utility rooms where standard board might swell.

How easy is it to paint MDF?

Very easy. Because MDF has no grain or knots, it provides a perfectly smooth "blank canvas." For the best finish, you should use an MDF primer first - especially on the cut edges, which are more porous and tend to "soak up" paint.

Can I use MDF for intricate decorative work?

Absolutely. Because it is a consistent, engineered material with no voids, it is the best choice for intricate machining, routing, and laser cutting. It won't splinter like natural wood, allowing for very clean, sharp edges on decorative panels or moldings.

Is MDF a sustainable choice for my project?

Yes. The MDF boards in this collection are typically made from wood fibres and recycled timber that might otherwise go to waste. They are also FSC or PEFC certified, meaning the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.

Do you offer "handy board" sizes for MDF?

Yes. Just like the plywood range, the MDF collection includes pre-cut smaller boards (such as 1220mm x 606mm). These are much easier to transport in a car and handle on your own than a heavy, full-size 8ft x 4ft sheet.
